Admission Requirements

Quick Guide for Eligibility Rules

It is the parents’ responsibility to contact the school for requirements that are school specific (e.g. proficiency tests, auditions, etc.) and submit all required documentation by January 15.

A.  Basic Criteria for Random Selection Magnets

  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.

  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.

  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be a “2” or higher for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.

  • No more than 10 unexcused absences for the previous year and 5 unexcused absences for the first semester of the current year.

  • No teacher recommendation will be required.

  • Parents must schedule any required language skills testing for International Studies programs by January 15.

  • FSA scores can only be reviewed as part of the eligibility process under very limited circumstances.

  • Elementary schools may not review FSA scores.

  • Secondary schools with a seven or an eight-period schedule may not review FSA scores.

  • Secondary schools with a six-period schedule may review FSA scores to determine if a student has at least one elective period available to take Magnet theme courses.

B.  Enhanced Criteria for Designated Random Selection Magnets

 

  • A minimum of 2.5 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.

  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.

  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be a “2” or higher for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year.

  • No more than 10 unexcused absences for the previous year and 5 unexcused absences for the first semester of the current year.

  • May require that student(s) complete and receive credit for Physical Science Honors and Algebra 1 Honors prior to the start of the school year for which he/she is applying. Proof of course enrollment or completion must be submitted by January 15.

  • No teacher recommendation will be required.

  • Parents must schedule any required language skills testing for International Studies programs by January 15.

  • FSA scores can only be reviewed as part of the eligibility process under very limited circumstances.

    • AP Capstone (Advanced Placement) programs – Grades 9-12

    • Cambridge International programs – Grades 9-12

    • International Baccalaureate (IB) programs – Grades 9-12

    • International Studies (IS) programs – Grades 9-12

    • iPrep programs – Grades 9-12

    • iTech program at Miami Springs SHS

    • Jose Marti Mast 6-12 Academy (grades 9-12), Maritime & Science Technology Academy (MAST Academy), MAST @ FIU Biscayne Bay Campus, Medical Academy for Science and Technology (MAST @ Homestead), iPrep Academy (9-12), TERRA Environmental Research Institute, Cutler Bay Senior High (COAST) Ocean Academy of Science & Technology
